Squarespace alternatives — an honest comparison for small businesses

Start by admitting what it is good at

Squarespace deserves its reputation for one specific thing: it makes a business with no design resource look considered. The templates have genuine taste, the typography is handled, and a café or a studio with good photographs can produce something that looks better than most bespoke work at ten times the price.

That matters because if you leave for the wrong reason, you will end up somewhere uglier and no better off. So be precise about what is actually wrong.

The three reasons people leave

It costs more than it seemed. Annual billing, the tier for the feature you needed, transaction fees on the lower commerce plans.

Every Squarespace site looks like a Squarespace site. This is the double edge of taste being built in — the templates are good, which means everyone uses them, which means the design that flatters you also makes you indistinguishable. See why do websites built on the same platform look alike.

You cannot take it with you. Content can be exported; the site cannot be lifted and hosted elsewhere. Same shape as Wix, and the same consequence — the cost of leaving grows with everything you build.

The alternatives

Wix. Best at: more editing freedom than Squarespace and a larger app market. The catch: the same portability position, and most people find it produces less attractive results without design input. A sideways move unless flexibility is specifically your complaint.

WordPress. Best at: genuine ownership and unlimited scope. The catch: you inherit maintenance, updates and plugin conflicts, and getting it to look as good as a Squarespace template usually costs either a designer or a premium theme everyone else is also using.

Webflow. Best at: real design control while staying visual, and you can export the code. The catch: it is a designer's tool wearing a builder's clothes. If nobody on your side enjoys design work, it will not save you from templates — it will just give you more ways to make something worse.

A designer plus something to run it on. Best at: an actual answer to the sameness problem, which none of the builders solve. The catch: it depends on what you agree about ongoing changes, and that conversation decides whether your site is still accurate in a year.

Helm

Best at: the sameness problem and the ownership problem together. The design is custom — the team builds it in days, or Helm AI generates a unique one from a brief rather than filling in a template, or you attach the site you already have. Then the parts that change are yours: text, images, prices, hours, and the SEO title and description on each page.

The exit answer is the direct opposite of Squarespace's: the code is yours and it can move, and the domain is in your business's name.

The catch: you are not editing the design yourself. Sections are set when the site is built, and you own the content inside them — which is deliberate, because it is what stops a site drifting into a scrapbook, but it is a real trade. If choosing your own layouts is the part you enjoy, Squarespace is better at that than we are and you should stay.

The honest recommendation

If Squarespace is working and your only complaint is price, look at the tier you are on before you look at alternatives — a lot of people are paying for commerce features on a brochure site.

If the problem is that your site looks like everyone else's, no other builder fixes that, because the sameness is what templates are. That needs design, from a person or from a generator that actually starts from a blank page.

And if the problem is that you cannot leave, check the exit terms of wherever you are going first. It is the one question that is expensive to get wrong twice.
