Do I need a .com.lb domain, or is .com fine for a Lebanese business?

The short answer
A .com is fine for almost every Lebanese small business, and it is cheaper, faster to register and easier to transfer. A .com.lb signals a local business clearly and is worth having if you serve Lebanon only, but it is not required to rank locally — Google works out where you serve from your Google Business Profile and your address, not from your domain ending.

The short version
People ask this expecting the domain ending to be a ranking lever. It mostly is not.
What tells a search engine you serve Beirut is your Google Business Profile, your address, and the fact that people in Beirut search for you and visit you. A country domain is a supporting signal, not the mechanism.
So the decision is closer to a branding and practicality question than an SEO one — which is good, because it makes it much easier to decide.
When .com is the right call
You serve customers outside Lebanon, or want to. Exports, diaspora customers, tourists, anyone ordering from abroad. A .com carries no geographic implication and never has to be explained.
You want the simplest possible administration. Registration is instant, cheap, renewable anywhere, and transferring between registrars is a routine process you can do yourself.
You may move or expand. A .com follows you. A country domain quietly becomes wrong if the business relocates.
For most cafés, restaurants and small service businesses, .com is the sensible default.
When .com.lb is genuinely worth it
You serve Lebanon only, and local trust is part of the sale. A .com.lb says "we are here" instantly, before anyone reads a word. For some customers that matters.
Your .com is taken. Common, and it is a real reason. A clean .com.lb beats a mangled .com with hyphens or an added word — that mangling costs you every time someone types it from memory.
You are a Lebanese institution rather than a shop. Schools, associations, professional bodies. The ending reads as correct rather than as a workaround.
Practical differences worth knowing before you choose
Country domains generally involve more process than a .com — registration through local channels, sometimes documentation, and transfers that are less self-service. None of that is a problem; it is just slower and less in your hands, which matters on the day you need to move quickly.
Confirm before registering: what is required, what it costs to renew, and — most importantly — whose name it will be registered in. That last one is the same question that matters for any domain, and it is the one that causes real trouble later.
The both option
Register both, point one at the other. Costs little, protects the name, and means someone typing either ending arrives at you. Pick one as the address you actually publish, use it everywhere consistently, and let the other simply redirect.
Consistency matters more than the choice: your website, your Google listing, your social profiles and your printed material should all show the same one.
What actually decides local ranking
If the goal behind the question is showing up when someone nearby searches, the domain is not where the leverage is. In rough order of impact:
- A complete, verified Google Business Profile
- Name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear
- Pages that answer the specific things people search for
- Real reviews, and replies to them
- A site that loads quickly and works on a phone
A .com.lb with none of those will lose to a .com that has them.
Whichever you choose, register it in your own name
The choice between the two matters considerably less than a detail that applies to both: the registrant should be your business.
The most common way a Lebanese business loses a domain is not a dispute over .com versus .com.lb. It is that whoever set it up registered it under their own name and email, and three years later they are not answering messages. That is recoverable, and it is a bad month — see someone else controls my domain if it is already the situation you are in.
Ask before anyone buys it, and get the confirmation in writing. Helm registers the domain in the client's business name as standard, which is less generosity than the only defensible default.
